Foot Health Treatments

Professional, Gentle Care Delivered to Your Door

Common Foot Complaints

Whether you’re struggling with painful heels, troublesome nails, or a problem you’ve been quietly putting off for months, Jo can help. Browse the common conditions below to find what sounds familiar, then discover how Jo’s approach turns every visit into something far less daunting than you might expect.

Common foot problems, thick or difficult to reach nails

Nails That Are Overgrown, Thick, or Difficult to Reach

Whether your nails have become too thick to cut comfortably, have changed colour or texture over time, or you simply can no longer reach your feet easily, Jo provides thorough nail care that leaves everything clean, tidy, and properly managed.

common foot complaints - corns or callouses

Painful Lumps, Corns, or Areas of Hard Skin

If you have a small hard lump on your foot that hurts when you walk, or patches of rough, thickened skin that keep returning, you are most likely dealing with a corn or callus. These are very common, entirely treatable, and far more comfortable once properly removed.

common foot complaints - cracked heels

Dry, Cracked, or Bleeding Heels

Cracked heels are more than a cosmetic problem. When the skin at the heel splits deeply it can bleed and become genuinely painful with every step. Jo treats even severely cracked heels back to smooth, comfortable skin in a single visit.

common foot complaints - discoloured, thick, smelly nails

Discoloured, Thickened, or Smelly Nails

Yellow, brown, or crumbly nails with a strong odour are the telltale signs of a fungal nail infection. Over-the-counter treatments rarely work. Jo offers a specialist drill-based treatment that tackles the infection at its source, currently unavailable from any other practitioner in the area.

Common foot complaints - verruca's

Rough Patches or Warts on the Sole of the Foot

Verrucas are caused by a virus that disguises itself from the immune system, which is why they can persist for months or years. Jo’s fortnightly treatment is gentle, pain-free, and works by encouraging the body’s own immune response to clear the infection.

Common foot complaints - In-growing toenails

An Ingrown or Painful Nail Edge

Ingrown nails can range from mildly uncomfortable to acutely painful, and they rarely improve on their own. Jo can treat many cases directly, and where surgical removal is needed she works with a trusted local Podiatrist and can make that referral for you.

Common foot problems, caused by diabetes, cancer

Foot Problems Complicated by Diabetes, Cancer, or Other Health Conditions

If you or someone you care for lives with diabetes, cancer, dementia, arthritis, or a mobility or sensory impairment, professional foot care is not optional. Jo has specialist training in high-risk patient care and treats this group of patients regularly, with all the patience and skill their needs require.

Common foot complaints - plantar fasciitis

Heel Pain That Is Worst First Thing in the Morning

That sharp, stabbing pain in the heel when you first get out of bed is a classic sign of plantar fasciitis. It is extremely common and very treatable with the right footwear advice and a targeted exercise programme.

Common foot complaints - damaged, deformed nails

A Nail That Has Grown Back Damaged or Incomplete

Following ingrown nail surgery, or as a cosmetic solution for a holiday or special occasion, Jo can reconstruct a natural-looking nail using the latest flexible Poly Gel material, built entirely by hand.

What to Expect From Jo

Getting in Touch

Simply call or message Jo to discuss what is bothering you. For conditions like fungal nails or ingrown nails, it is really helpful to send a photo beforehand so Jo can assess the situation accurately and give you a clear idea of what treatment involves and what it will cost before you commit to anything.

Jo responds to enquiries at all hours, even outside of working hours, because she genuinely cares about getting back to people promptly.

w

The Consultation

Every appointment begins with a short consultation. Jo will ask about your general health, any relevant medical history, and whether you are taking any medications including blood thinners. This is not about being intrusive — it is essential for tailoring your treatment safely, particularly for diabetic or high-risk patients.

All nail polish must be removed before nail treatments so Jo can properly assess the nail beneath. Jo will let you know this in advance when you book.

The Treatment

Jo brings everything she needs with her. Her equipment is sterilised individually in an autoclave and arrives pouched and sealed, opened in front of you at the start of each appointment. You can expect a calm, unhurried experience in your own chair, with a cup of tea if you fancy one.

Most patients are surprised by how gentle the treatment is. Jo has a light touch and works methodically, explaining what she is doing as she goes. Many patients who arrived dreading the appointment find themselves booking their next one before Jo has even packed up her kit.

Aftercare & Ongoing Advice

At the end of every appointment Jo will talk you through how to look after your feet between visits. This is included as standard, not as an add-on, because Jo’s goal is your long-term foot health, not just a short-term fix.

For conditions that benefit from regular management, such as hard skin, corns, and fungal nails, Jo will recommend a follow-up schedule suited to your individual needs. Most patients settle into a routine of every six to eight weeks and genuinely look forward to their appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the appointment take?

Most appointments last between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the nature of the treatment required. Jo has great patience and keeps every patient fully informed throughout, explaining what is needed, how the treatment works, and how many future visits, if any, are likely to be required. Many patients need just a single appointment, while others benefit from a regular scheduled visit. Jo will always be upfront about what to expect.

What’s the difference between an FHP Foot Health Practitioner and a Chiropodist Podiatrist?

Chiropodist and Podiatrist are actually two names for the same profession. Podiatrist is simply the more modern term, adopted from America. Podiatrists train at degree level over three years at university, and their title is legally protected, meaning no one else can use it.

A Foot Health Practitioner, or FHP, completes a diploma-level training programme, typically over one year. An FHP is trained to recognise and treat the same common foot conditions as a Podiatrist and delivers the same routine treatments, but at a lower cost and often with more time devoted to each patient.

Where a treatment falls outside the scope of an FHP, Jo will always refer you to a Podiatrist. This includes procedures such as nail surgery under anaesthetic, measuring for orthotics, and specialist foot strapping. Jo works collaboratively with a trusted local Podiatrist and can make that referral directly, so you are never left without the right support.

Why is Jo’s fungal nail treatment different to anything else available?

Jo was among the first practitioners trained in the Lacuna method, which involves drilling tiny holes into the nail plate to allow antifungal medication to reach the nail bed. However, she found the technique daunting for patients and technically demanding to deliver consistently, so she reviewed her approach and developed her own refined method.

Using the same specialist fine tools, Jo now gently and painlessly files away all fungal areas of the nail, exposing the nail bed and the deeper layers of the nail rather than leaving substantial fungal material in place as the Lacuna method does. It is similar in principle to a dentist removing the decayed parts of a tooth. This exposure means that antifungal products applied afterwards can penetrate far more effectively, treating any remaining infection and preventing regrowth. It is Jo’s own tailored approach, refined through years of practice, and the results speak for themselves.

Does Jo come to me, or do I go to her?

Jo comes to you, wherever you need her. The majority of her work takes place in private homes across her coverage area, but she also visits patients in sheltered accommodation and supported living settings, including seniors and adults with learning difficulties. With her care background, Jo is completely at ease with entry via key safe and always allows plenty of time for elderly patients to get to the door. Jo does not just look after your feet either. If she notices anything else of concern during a visit she will always report back to family members or the GP as appropriate.

Can I claim my foot health treatments on health insurance?

Unfortunately most health insurers do not yet recognise the Foot Health Practitioner qualification for claims purposes, which means treatments with an FHP are often not covered under standard policies.

However, Health Shield is one insurer that does recognise the FHP qualification, and will cover your foot health treatments as part of your policy. If you are in the process of arranging health insurance and would like your appointments with Jo to be covered, Health Shield is well worth considering.

If you are unsure whether your existing policy covers FHP treatments, it is always worth contacting your insurer directly to check.

Why does Jo need to know my medical history? It feels quite personal.

Jo completely understands that medical history feels private, and it is treated as such with the utmost confidentiality. The reason she asks is straightforward: some treatments and recommendations are not appropriate for certain health conditions, and knowing your history allows Jo to tailor your care safely and effectively. It is particularly important to let Jo know if you are taking blood thinners, if you are diabetic and what type, or if you have had cancer treatment or high-risk heart surgery. This information is never shared without your knowledge and is used solely to ensure your treatment is right for you.

My parent has Alzheimer’s. Will Jo know how to handle that?

Absolutely. Jo holds Dementia Friends training alongside specialist qualifications in vulnerable adult care and safeguarding in the community. She also has specific training in diabetic and high-risk patient care. Jo is experienced, calm, and entirely comfortable working with patients who require additional time, gentleness, or a specific approach to their treatment. Where anything falls outside her scope of practice she will always refer on to a local or NHS Podiatrist.
